The front passenger airbag and the passenger knee airbag may have been installed with the wrong mounting fasteners. If those airbags are not held in place the way they were designed to be, they may not inflate properly in a crash, so they may not protect the person sitting there. Dealers will replace the mounting fasteners at no charge. Nissan expects to mail owner letters on September 25, 2026, and affected VINs became searchable on NHTSA's site on August 17, 2026.

Each door latches onto a metal catch bolted to the body. On these vehicles those catches may have been welded badly and can break. If one breaks, that door can swing open while the car is moving. Someone leaning against the door could fall out, and a door flying open can cause a crash. The dealer will replace the door catches, called strikers, free of charge.

Certain Nissan Rogue and Altima and Infiniti QX50 and QX55 models with the 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter variable compression turbo engine were built with faulty engine bearings. Those bearings can wear out and destroy the engine. In a bad failure the bearing can punch a hole in the engine block, spraying hot oil that can start a fire. The dealer reprograms the engine computer at no charge to reduce the risk.

On some 2024 Altimas, the bolts that hold the electric power steering unit to the steering rack can work loose. The steering rack is the part that turns your front wheels when you turn the wheel. If those bolts loosen, the steering can go slack or seize up, and turning the car may become difficult or impossible. Nissan dealers will install a whole new steering gear assembly at no cost. Letters went out to owners in February 2024.
The wiring that carries the picture from the backup camera can get damaged. When that happens, the image on the screen may look distorted or may not appear at all when you shift into reverse, so these Altima and Sentra vehicles do not meet the federal rear visibility requirement. Dealers will inspect the camera and its wiring and replace parts if they find damage. If nothing is damaged, they will add protective tape and reroute the wiring so it stops rubbing.

Some Altima and Titan vehicles left the factory with Continental tires that were heated too long while they were being made. Over-baked tires can crack in the sidewall and lose air all at once, or the tread can peel away from the tire. Either one can happen while you are driving and make the vehicle hard to control. A tie rod is the part that connects your steering to a front wheel. On these cars, the fastener holding the tie rod joint was not tightened properly, so the joint can separate from the wheel assembly. If that happens, you lose steering control with no warning at all. A dealer will tighten the fasteners on both the left and right sides, or install new fasteners if they are needed.

Some Altima S models left the factory with Continental tires from one bad batch. Those tires were cooked too long when they were made, which can leave the rubber weaker than it should be. A weakened tire can split at the sidewall and lose air all at once, or the tread can peel off the tire while you are driving. Either one can make the car hard to control. A Nissan dealer will check whether your tires came from the affected batch and swap them out if so.

On certain 2020 Nissan Altima, Maxima and Leaf cars, the rear window glass may not stay securely attached to the body. It can come loose and separate from the car, including while you are driving. Glass that lets go can create a hazard for you and for the drivers behind you, and Nissan says that raises the chance of a crash. Nissan dealers will replace the back window glass at no cost to you.

Your hood has two latches: a main one and a backup that catches the hood if the main one lets go. On these 2013-2018 Altimas, the backup latch can rust over time and stick in the open position, so it never catches. If the main latch is released by accident and the backup is stuck, the hood can fly up while you are driving and block your view of the road. Dealers add a stronger release spring, a warning label, and care instructions.

The backup camera and display settings can be adjusted so the rear view image no longer appears — and the system keeps that setting the next time you shift into reverse. That means the screen can stay blank when you back up and you cannot see what is behind the vehicle. Because of this, these vehicles do not meet the federal rear visibility rule. A dealer will update the camera settings software for free.

The ring that holds the fuel pump onto the gas tank may not have been tightened all the way at the factory. If it is loose or has come off, gasoline can leak out of the tank. This affects certain Altimas with front-wheel drive and the 2.5-liter engine. A dealer will look at the fuel tank and either tighten the ring properly or, if it came off entirely, put in a new fuel pump.

A small part behind the brake pedal may sit in the wrong spot, so the car thinks the brake is being pressed all the time. Two things can go wrong. Your brake lights can stay lit even when you are not braking, which confuses drivers behind you. And the shift lever can be moved out of Park without your foot on the brake, so the car could roll away on its own. Both raise the risk of a crash.

On some 2019 Nissan Altimas, the small clip that holds the fuel line onto the high-pressure fuel pump may not have been snapped shut at the factory. If that clip is loose, the fuel line can shift and let gasoline leak out, and leaking gasoline around a hot engine can start a fire. If the line comes off completely, the engine can shut off while you are driving. A dealer will seat the hose and lock the clip.
