Jeep fuel system recalls: leaks, fire risk, and sudden stalls
Five recalls that fall into leaks and stalls. Three are fire risks from fuel escaping into the engine bay: the 2018 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk's 6.2L supercharged fuel line can separate, 2018 Cherokees with the 2.4L engine may have a fuel tube that leaks fuel into the engine compartment, and 2020 Wranglers with the 2.0L engine can develop a cracked fuel supply line connector. The other two are pumps that quit. On 2017-2018 Renegade 4X2 flex fuel models with the 2.4L, a fuel pump assembly manufacturing error can stall the engine under high power demand, high altitude or high ambient temperatures. On 2020-2022 Wrangler and Gladiator diesels, alongside Ram 1500, the high pressure fuel pump can fail and stall the engine.
Warning signs to watch for
- A gasoline smell around the vehicle or coming through the vents
- Wet spots, drips or fuel odor in the engine compartment
- Engine stalling, especially at high altitude, in hot weather, or under heavy throttle on flex fuel Renegades
- Sudden stalling on 3.0L diesel Wrangler and Gladiator models
- Smoke or fire from the engine bay where fuel has reached hot parts
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of the five formally orders you to park the vehicle, but the three leak recalls are urgent. On the Trackhawk, which risks both stalling and an engine fire, avoid driving any more than necessary and get the inspection immediately. On the 2018 Cherokee and 2020 Wrangler, if you smell gasoline or see a leak, stop driving and have the Jeep towed rather than driven in. For the Renegade fuel pump and the diesel high pressure fuel pump, driving until the repair is acceptable — just schedule it soon, since a stall raises crash risk.
What the free repair involves
Dealers inspect and, as necessary, replace the fuel line on the Trackhawk, the fuel tube on the 2.4L Cherokee, and the fuel supply line on the 2.0L Wrangler. Renegade flex fuel models get a new fuel pump. Diesel Wranglers, Gladiators and Ram 1500s get a replacement high pressure fuel pump plus inspection and replacement of additional fuel system components. All free of charge.

Common questions
I can smell gas in my Jeep — should I drive it to the dealer?
No. On the 2018 Cherokee and 2020 Wrangler recalls, the guidance is to stop driving and have the vehicle towed if you smell fuel or see a leak, because gasoline reaching a hot engine can start a fire.
My Wrangler is a 2020 — is it in two fuel recalls?
It depends on the engine. The cracked fuel supply line connector recall covers 2020 Wranglers with the 2.0 liter gas engine; the high pressure fuel pump recall covers 2020-2022 Wranglers with the 3.0L diesel. Your VIN confirms which.
My Renegade only stalls sometimes — is that still the recall?
It fits the pattern. The 2017-2018 Renegade 4X2 flex fuel recall describes stalling in certain operating conditions: high power demand combined with high altitude and/or high ambient temperatures. Dealers replace the fuel pump free of charge regardless of how often it happens.
