On certain Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 cars, the side curtain airbags that run above the side windows were built with a defect. The metal canister that fills the bag with gas can burst instead of inflating the bag the way it should. If that happens, sharp pieces of metal can fly into the passenger area and strike the people inside. Dealers will replace both the right and left side curtain airbags at no cost to you.
The parking brake on these cars may not have been adjusted correctly when they were built. That means the brake may not hold the car the way it should, and the car can roll away after you park it. Because of this, the vehicles also do not meet the federal safety rule for light vehicle brakes. A dealer will adjust the parking brake properly, and the work is free. Owner letters went out in late February 2024.
These Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, and Chrysler 300 cars have small sensors in the wheels that watch your tire pressure. The batteries inside those sensors can die early, so a sensor stops working. Then the car cannot warn you when a tire is actually low. Worse, if the warning light is already lit because of a dead sensor battery, you may ignore it and miss a real low tire. Driving on a low tire can cause it to fail.
These cars have sensors in the wheels that watch your tire pressure. The battery inside a sensor can die too early, so the sensor stops working. When that happens, the system will not warn you that a tire is going low. Worse, if the warning light is already on because of a dead sensor battery, it can hide a real low-tire problem. A low tire can fail while you drive. Dealers will check the sensors and replace any bad ones.
When these cars were built, the glue that holds the windshield in place may not have bonded properly. The windshield looks and works normally in everyday driving, but in a crash it could separate from the car instead of staying put, which can lead to injuries. Because of this, the vehicle does not meet the federal safety rule for windshield mounting. Your dealer will remove the old sealant, put in new sealant and refit the windshield, free of charge. Letters were mailed August 31, 2021.
The instrument cluster is the set of gauges and warning lights right in front of the steering wheel. On these cars its software can fail to light up the warnings, so a problem with one of the car's systems might never show on the dash. You could be driving with a fault and have no idea. Federal rules require those warnings to work, so these cars do not meet the standard. A dealer will update the cluster software.
The computer that runs the engine has a small part inside, a voltage regulator chip, that can fail. When it does, the engine can shut off while you are driving, or the vehicle may not start at all. A stall in traffic leaves you without engine power and can put you in the path of other vehicles. Dealers will replace the whole engine computer at no charge.
These vehicles have cruise control, which holds a set speed for you. A short circuit in the wiring can lock the cruise control on. If that happens, tapping the brake pedal or pressing the off button may not shut it off, and the vehicle can keep its speed or even speed up on its own. Chrysler tells owners to stop using cruise control until the free computer software update is done at a dealer.
The wrong part may have been installed inside the automatic transmission. It is a rod that locks the transmission when you move the shifter into Park. If the wrong rod is in there, the transmission may not actually lock, so the vehicle can roll on its own after you think you have parked it. That could hurt someone standing nearby or cause a crash. A dealer installs the correct rod for free.
