Chrysler electrical recalls: hybrid fires, sudden stalling and cruise control

Chrysler's electrical recalls are dominated by the Pacifica, and the plug-in hybrid most of all. Three fire recalls form the serious core: the 12-volt isolator post behind the driver's seat on 2017-2020 PHEVs and again on 2023 PHEVs, plus a high-voltage battery pack on 2020-2022 PHEVs that can ignite while the van is parked with the ignition off. A second thread is sudden loss of power — a powertrain control module replacement on 2018 Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram models, a loose battery ground causing stalls and steering-assist loss on 2017-2019 Pacificas, and a transmission wiring short shutting down 2017-2023 PHEVs. Cruise control that won't cancel, a removable park release plug and unlit cluster warnings round out the list.
Warning signs to watch for
- The engine quits or shuts down unexpectedly while you are driving
- Loss of power steering assist, or steering that suddenly feels heavy, on a 2017-2019 Pacifica
- Cruise control that will not switch off or cancel when you ask it to
- On 2019 Chrysler 300, Charger and Challenger models, dashboard warnings that never light up — so a fault can go unnoticed
- The plug-in hybrid fire recalls give no warning at all: a fire can start while the van sits parked and switched off
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these nine notices tells you to stop driving, but three change where you park. The 2023 and 2020-2022 Pacifica plug-in hybrid fire recalls tell owners to park outside and away from structures until the repair is done, and the 2020-2022 notice also says not to charge the van; the 2017-2020 isolator post notice carries the same park-outside advice. With the cruise control recall, do not use cruise control until the reflash is complete. The stalling, park release plug and instrument cluster recalls allow normal driving while you book the repair.
What the free repair involves
A mix of software and hardware, all free of charge. Dealers increase torque on the 12-volt isolator post and fit a waterproof gasket, or correct the post to fit its anti-rotation stud; update the high-voltage battery pack control module software; replace or reflash the powertrain control module; clean and reassemble the battery ground connection; update the power inverter, cluster and engine control software; replace the manual park release plug; and reflash the instrument cluster.

Common questions
Can I still charge my Pacifica Hybrid?
Not if you have the 2020-2022 plug-in hybrid battery pack recall. That notice tells owners not to charge the vehicle and to park it outside, away from structures, until the repair is done — the battery can start a fire even while parked and off.
Why has the 12-volt isolator post been recalled twice?
They are separate defects. On 2017-2020 plug-in hybrids the post behind the driver's seat may develop high resistance; on 2023 plug-in hybrids the post was incorrectly installed and can short. Each has its own repair, so check your VIN with Chrysler.
What do I do if my cruise control won't shut off?
The notice says to press the brakes firmly and steadily, shift into neutral, and place the vehicle in park once it has stopped. Do not use cruise control at all until dealers reflash the engine or powertrain control module.
