Will my Dodge stay in Park? Power train recalls explained
Three themes run through Dodge's power train recalls, and most involve the vehicle not staying where you put it. Park and rollaway: 2018 Charger, Challenger and Durango may have the wrong transmission park lock rod installed, and the 2024-2025 Charger EV can lose the park function because of an incorrectly installed spring. Shifting: the 2022 Charger and Durango shifter assembly was not properly heat-treated and may not engage drive, while the 2023 Durango Pursuit shifter can interfere with its boot and come out of gear. Driveline: 2019 Durango and Grand Cherokee front differential pinion gears can wear down and cut power, and 2015-2018 Charger Pursuit AWD V8 front driveshafts can detach. A Mopar Stage 1 or Demon Crate module can also trap cruise control on the 2018 Challenger.
Warning signs to watch for
- Vehicle rolls or creeps after you shift into Park
- Shifter will not properly engage Drive, or the car comes out of gear while moving
- Sudden loss of drive power with little or no warning
- Clunking, grinding or heavy vibration from underneath on a Charger Pursuit
- Cruise control will not disengage when you cancel it
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells owners to stop driving or park outside, but they are not equal. The 2019 Durango and Grand Cherokee front differential is the most serious: power can disappear without warning and the vehicle may not hold in Park, so get it to a dealer right away. With the Charger EV park-spring and the 2018 park lock rod recalls, set the parking brake every single time you park. Do not rely on cruise control on a Challenger with the recalled performance module. The shifter recalls are drivable, but repair them promptly.
What the free repair involves
Every repair is free. Dealers replace the front differential on the 2019 Durango, install the correct transmission park lock rod, replace the front driveshaft on Charger Pursuit all-wheel-drive V8 cars, replace the shifter assembly on the 2022 Charger and Durango and the shifter boot on the Durango Pursuit, replace the electric drive module on the Charger EV, and either reflash or replace the recalled performance module.

Common questions
What does "loss of park" mean for my Charger EV or 2018 Charger?
The transmission or drive module may not hold the vehicle when the selector is placed in Park, which can let it roll away. Set the parking brake every single time you park until the free repair is complete.
My Challenger has a Mopar Stage 1 kit — is it included?
That recall covers Mopar Stage 1 Kit powertrain control modules with part numbers P5160023 and P5160025, plus the Demon Crate module 68412287AA. Dealers either perform a software update or replace the module, free of charge.
I haven't noticed anything wrong with my 2019 Durango. Should I still go?
Yes. The front differential pinion gear teeth wear down gradually, and Chrysler describes power loss arriving without warning, along with the risk that the vehicle will not hold in Park. Dealers replace the entire front differential free.
