Why does my Dodge backup camera or reverse alert fail?
Every recall here is a federal rear-visibility or pedestrian-alert compliance failure. Two patterns repeat. First, the rearview image: the 2018 Journey lost it through the rearview mirror, the 2019-2020 Journey and 2019-2021 Ram ProMaster through cracked camera microprocessors, the 2021-2022 Durango through radio software, and the 2018-2020 Charger Pursuit whenever stealth mode was selected, while the 2019 Challenger and Durango kept a stale image on screen. Second, the pedestrian alert: the 2023-2024 Hornet may have a missing or disconnected rear siren, and the 2024-2025 Charger EV amplifier may lack the software that produces exterior sound. The Hornet appears twice, since 2023-2025 cars may also show no camera image at all.
Warning signs to watch for
- Screen stays black or shows no image when you shift into reverse
- Camera picture lingers on the display after you shift out of reverse
- On a Charger Pursuit, the rear image disappears only while stealth mode is on
- No warning sound when the Hornet is backing up
- The Charger EV's missing exterior sound may give no sign you can notice from the driver's seat
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these eight recalls tells owners to stop driving or to park outside, and all are rated moderate or mild. The vehicle steers, brakes and accelerates normally; what fails is the view or the warning sound behind you. Until the repair, back up slowly, turn around and look, and walk behind the vehicle before you shift into reverse. Hornet and Charger EV owners should take extra care in parking lots and at crosswalks, because people nearby may not hear the vehicle coming.
What the free repair involves
Remedies vary by recall and all are free. Dealers replace the rearview mirror on the 2018 Journey and Ram, replace the camera on the 2019-2021 ProMaster and Journey, update body control module software so stealth mode switches off in reverse, update radio software, update or replace the Hornet display, inspect and secure or replace the Hornet rear siren connector, and update the Charger EV amplifier software. Two radio recalls can be delivered over-the-air.

Common questions
Can I just use my mirrors until the camera is fixed?
Yes. No notice in this group limits driving, and mirrors plus turning to look are how you should back up in the meantime. Federal rules still require a working rear image, so book the free repair rather than living with it.
My Journey or ProMaster letter says the remedy isn't ready. What now?
The 2019-2021 ProMaster and 2019-2020 Journey camera recall started with an interim letter explaining the safety risk. Chrysler will send a second notice once the final remedy is available, and dealers will then replace the rearview camera free of charge.
Can the radio software update be done without a dealer visit?
Two of these recalls can. The 2021-2023 radio software fix may be done by a dealer or delivered over-the-air, and the 2019-2020 lingering-image recall offered an optional over-the-air update as an alternative to visiting the dealer.
