Jeep defroster, wiper and backup camera recalls explained for owners
Visibility is the thread here, and defrosting is the repeat offender. Two of the four recalls involve a defroster and defogger that stops working: a hybrid control processor software error on 2021-2024 Wrangler and 2022-2024 Grand Cherokee models, and a blower motor that can fail on the 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L. Both are federal safety standard compliance failures. The 2021 Grand Cherokee L has a radio software error that can keep the rearview camera image from displaying, another compliance issue. The fourth is purely mechanical and shared with Ram: windshield wiper arms on 2019-2020 Compass and Ram 1500 vehicles can loosen and leave the wipers working poorly.
Warning signs to watch for
- Windshield and windows stay fogged or iced because the defroster and defogger will not clear them.
- No air from the blower motor on 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models.
- Wipers that sweep unevenly, slip or stop clearing the glass in rain or snow.
- A blank screen instead of the rearview camera image when you shift into reverse.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls restricts driving or parking — no stop-driving order, no park-outside instruction. The limits are about conditions rather than the vehicle. If your defroster or blower has quit, avoid driving in cold, damp or foggy weather where you cannot keep the windshield clear, and get the software update done before winter. With loose wiper arms, take extra care in rain and snow. With no rearview image, back up using your mirrors and by looking over your shoulder until it is fixed.
What the free repair involves
Two of these are software fixes: the dealer updates the hybrid control processor software for the defroster, and FCA updates the radio software to restore the rearview image. The other two are physical: dealers tighten the wiper arm nuts, and inspect and replace the blower motor as necessary. All four repairs are free of charge, and none is described as over-the-air.

Is the Jeep defroster problem a software or a hardware issue?
Both, depending on your vehicle. On 2021-2024 Wrangler and 2022-2024 Grand Cherokee models, a hybrid control processor software error disables the system and the dealer reflashes it. On the 2023 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, a failing blower motor is inspected and replaced.
My backup camera works fine — do I still need the recall?
Yes. The 2021 Grand Cherokee L radio software error means the rearview image may not display, which puts the vehicle out of compliance with the federal rear visibility standard. The update applies whether or not you have already seen it fail.
Why is a Ram 1500 included in the Jeep wiper recall?
The loose wiper arm recall covers 2019-2020 Jeep Compass along with Ram 1500 and 1500 Classic trucks, because the same wiper arm attachment is involved. The dealer tightens the wiper nuts on any affected vehicle, free of charge.
