Why are Toyota bumpers, grilles and covers falling off in traffic?
Every recall in this group is about something bolted to the outside of the vehicle working loose and falling into traffic, not about how the Toyota drives. Accessories account for three of the four: a Billet Grille Overlay on 2015-2018 4Runner whose securing U-nut can fracture, a genuine-accessory tonneau cover on 2022-2023 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid whose attachment joints come loose, and a tow hitch cover on 2023-2024 Sequoia Hybrid that can separate from the rear bumper. The fourth is factory bodywork: on 2020-2023 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, a minor impact to the front lower bumper cover can leave it loose or detaching. Severity here runs medium to low, and the hazard falls mostly on the drivers behind you.
Warning signs to watch for
- A grille overlay, tonneau cover, bumper cover or hitch cover that rattles, sits crooked or feels loose
- Visible gaps or missing hardware around the front bumper cover after a minor bump
- A tonneau cover that lifts or shifts at highway speed
- The notices describe no driving symptom — the part may give no warning before it detaches
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and all are rated medium to low. The vehicle itself drives and brakes normally in every case; the risk is a part leaving the vehicle and becoming a road hazard for someone behind you. It is generally fine to keep driving while you schedule the free repair. If the 4Runner grille overlay, Tundra tonneau cover, Highlander front bumper cover or Sequoia Hybrid hitch cover already feels loose, have it looked at before more highway driving.
What the free repair involves
Everything here is hardware work at the dealer, free of charge. Southeast Toyota replaces the 4Runner grille overlay U-nuts with upgraded hardware. Tundra owners get new tonneau cover hardware installed on the existing cover. Highlander dealers repair or replace the upper and lower front bumper covers as needed, and Sequoia Hybrid dealers replace the tow hitch cover and modify the rear bumper. No software or over-the-air fix applies.

Common questions
Does this affect my Toyota if I never added any accessories?
Three of the four recalls apply only to accessory parts — the 4Runner Billet Grille Overlay, a genuine tonneau cover on Tundra and Tundra Hybrid, and the Sequoia Hybrid tow hitch cover. The Highlander front lower bumper cover recall is factory bodywork.
My bumper cover looks fine after a small parking bump — is it covered?
Yes. Toyota's notice says a minor impact to the front lower bumper cover on 2020-2023 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid can leave it loose or detaching. Dealers repair or replace the upper and lower covers as necessary, at no cost.
Can I keep using the tonneau cover or hitch cover meanwhile?
The notices do not ban use, but the concern is the part detaching at speed. Get the new Tundra attachment hardware, or the Sequoia Hybrid cover replacement and bumper modification, scheduled promptly, and check for looseness before long highway trips.
