Which Toyota tire and wheel recalls affect trucks and SUVs?
Toyota's tire recalls here fall into two camps. The larger is load rating: 20-inch tires fitted to Highlander through regional distributors — Gulf States' Blackout Package on 2022-2024 Highlander L and LE, and Southeast Toyota's accessory tires on 2021-2024 Highlander — carry too little load capacity for the vehicle's gross axle weight rating, leaving those vehicles noncompliant with federal safety standards. The other camp is the full-size trucks and Sequoia Hybrid: 2024 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid and Sequoia Hybrid may have inner sidewall damage on the passenger-side front and rear tires that lets air out suddenly, while 2023 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid and Sequoia Hybrid may have an insufficiently welded spare tire chain. One 2023 RAV4 recall covers damaged valve stems in 17-inch accessory wheels.
Warning signs to watch for
- A tire that loses pressure suddenly rather than gradually, or a tire pressure warning light
- Air leaking at the valve stem on RAV4 17-inch accessory alloy wheels
- Repeatedly low pressure in the passenger-side front or rear tire on a 2024 Tundra or Sequoia Hybrid
- A rattle from under the rear of the truck, or a spare tire hanging low
- Inner sidewall damage sits where you cannot see it, so there may be no visible warning at all
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of the five carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction. The 2024 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid and Sequoia Hybrid sidewall recall is the most serious because a tire can go flat suddenly and without warning, so get that inspection right away. The underrated 20-inch Highlander tires matter most when the vehicle is carrying a full load of people or cargo, since that is when an overloaded tire can blow out. The spare carrier chain and the RAV4 valve stems allow normal driving; watch your tire pressure and book the check promptly.
What the free repair involves
Every repair is free, with no software or over-the-air element. Dealers inspect the 2024 Tundra and Sequoia Hybrid tires and replace them as necessary, and replace the spare tire carrier assembly on 2023 trucks. For Highlander, Gulf States and Southeast Toyota inspect and replace the underrated tires and fit a corrected tire information label. RAV4 wheels get new valve stems and corrected load capacity labels as needed.
