Why Toyota backup cameras go blank, freeze or show the wrong view
Almost every recall in this group is the same failure in a different wrapper: the rearview image does not reach the screen when you shift into reverse. Software in the parking-assist ECU or multimedia display is the usual culprit, and vehicles with the Panoramic View Monitor system dominate — 2023 Mirai and Lexus sedans, the 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus and Subaru Solterra group whose cameras freeze or distort, and Tundra, which appears twice, once for 2022-2025 Tundra and Sequoia Hybrid and again for 2024-2025 Tundra. Only the 2019 RAV4 recall is hardware, a damaged electrical connector. The outlier is the Corolla Cross Hybrid, recalled because its reverse pedestrian warning sound is too quiet. One entry is a BMW-filed recall covering the Toyota Supra alongside BMW models.
Warning signs to watch for
- Black or blank screen when you shift into reverse
- The rearview picture appears late, so you begin backing before you can see behind you
- A frozen or distorted image that no longer matches what is actually behind the vehicle
- The camera view vanishing intermittently rather than every time
- On the Corolla Cross Hybrid, a reverse pedestrian warning sound that is faint or hard to hear
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells owners to stop driving or to park outside. Toyota treats them all as safe to drive: the vehicle steers, brakes and runs normally, and what you lose is your view or your audible warning behind the vehicle. Until the software or part is fixed, back up slowly, use your mirrors, and turn and look over your shoulder instead of trusting the screen. With the Corolla Cross Hybrid, assume people nearby cannot hear you reversing. Children and pedestrians behind the vehicle are the real risk.
What the free repair involves
Most are software. Dealers reprogram the parking-assist ECU, the multimedia display, or the pedestrian warning sound software, depending on the recall. The 2019 RAV4 is the exception: the dealer inspects the back-up camera system and replaces the audio display unit if needed, and BMW updates the camera software on the Supra. None of these installs over the air, so a dealer visit is required. All work is free.

Common questions
My Tundra already had a camera recall — why is there another one?
Tundra appears in more than one rearview camera recall with different causes. The 2022-2025 Tundra and Sequoia Hybrid recall covers a multimedia display software error; the 2024-2025 Tundra recall covers the parking-assist ECU software. They are separate free repairs.
Why is a Subaru Solterra included in a Toyota recall?
The Solterra uses the same Panoramic View Monitor system as the affected Toyota and Lexus models, so it is covered by the same freezing or distorted image recall and the same free parking-assist software update. Toyota's customer service line is 1-800-331-4331.
Is a quiet reverse warning sound really a safety recall?
Yes. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requirements cover the pedestrian warning sound, and 2023-2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles may not make enough of it in reverse. Dealers update the pedestrian warning sound software free of charge.
