Buying a used 2022 Rivian R1S? Check these 12 recalls first

12 NHTSA recalls · 4 owner complaints on file

A first-model-year R1S with an unusually long recall list: ten campaigns led by a critical loose steering bolt, plus several touching occupant protection — a front passenger airbag that may not deploy, loosely fastened side curtain airbags, curtain airbag trim clips, and front seat belt anchors and bolts. Others cover a rear suspension link that may come apart, defroster controls, and accelerator pedal release. None require stop-driving. Only four NHTSA complaints exist, though one cites a crash and two cite injuries; these reports are unverified.

Before you buy

  1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
  2. Confirm the critical steering bolt remedy and both seat belt anchor/bolt campaigns are closed on the VIN
  3. Ask whether the passenger airbag and curtain airbag recalls were completed, and check for airbag warning lights at startup
  4. Have the rear suspension links inspected and ask if the suspension recall repair was done
  5. Open recalls are repaired free at any Rivian dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
