Buying a used 2023 Toyota Tundra? Check these 13 recalls first

13 NHTSA recalls · 400 owner complaints on file

Ten recalls again, led by two critical items: a fuel line that can rub through and leak and an engine that can fail and stall, with a second engine stall recall alongside it. The rest cover a spare tire chain that can break, rolling in neutral, a blank instrument display, reverse lights failing from moisture, backup camera and tonneau cover issues. NHTSA lists 400 unverified owner complaints, heavily engine (162) and power train (85), with seven crashes, five fires and three injuries.

Before you buy

  1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
  2. Get documentation on both engine stall recalls and any engine work already done, plus the fuel line recall status.
  3. Lower and inspect the spare tire hoist chain, and check the reverse lights and backup camera for moisture or failure.
  4. Confirm the instrument display comes up fully at startup and that the truck holds still in neutral on a slope.
  5. Open recalls are repaired free at any Toyota dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
