Mercedes-Benz visibility recalls: Sprinter glass and GLE windshield camera problems

3 NHTSA recalls · Mercedes-Benz · Visibility · model years 2018–2025 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2025-05-30

All three Mercedes-Benz recalls in this group affect what you can see or what protects you through the glass, and two of them are Sprinter vans. The 2018-2019 Sprinter 1500, 2500, 3500 and 4500 were built with single-pane rear side window glass where laminated safety glass belonged, so rear occupants lose the protection those windows should give in a crash. The 2019-2020 Sprinter VS30 has a different problem behind the dash: an inadequate HVAC blower motor circuit that can overheat the wiring harness and start a fire. The newest recall moves to the SUVs — 2024-2025 GLE and GLS models, including Maybach and AMG versions, where the multi-purpose camera and rearview mirror can come loose from the windshield.

Warning signs to watch for

Is it safe to keep driving?

None of these three Mercedes-Benz notices tells you to stop driving or park outside. The Sprinter VS30 blower recall does set rules while you wait: run the front blower in manual mode only whenever the engine is on, and avoid the maximum blower speed and the lowest and highest temperature settings. With the Sprinter window glass and the GLE and GLS camera and mirror, you may keep driving, but the missing crash protection and the possible loss of your camera-based assistance systems are reasons not to postpone the appointment.

What the free repair involves

Repairs differ by recall and all are free. Sprinter vans with the wrong rear side windows get the single-pane glass replaced with laminated safety glass. On affected GLE and GLS models, dealers replace the windshield and reinstall the multi-purpose camera and rearview mirror. For the Sprinter VS30 blower circuit, owners follow the interim HVAC usage limits until the dealer remedy is performed.

Common questions

How do I know if my Sprinter has the wrong rear side windows?

You cannot tell by looking — single-pane and laminated glass look alike in place. Daimler Vans USA sent an interim notification on August 16, 2019, and a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner dealer can check your VIN against the recall.

Can I still use the heater and air conditioning in my Sprinter VS30?

Yes, but with limits until the repair. Operate the front blower in manual mode rather than automatic whenever the engine is on, and do not use the maximum blower setting or the lowest or highest temperature settings.

Does the GLE and GLS fix really involve a new windshield?

Yes. Dealers replace the windshield and reinstall the multi-purpose camera and rearview mirror at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2025; Mercedes-Benz USA customer service can confirm whether your vehicle is included.
