Buying a used 2018 Ford Transit? Check these 14 recalls first

14 NHTSA recalls · 57 owner complaints on file

The 2018 Transit's recall list is dominated by one theme: eight separate campaigns covering foldaway and fold-away seat backs and a rear seat cushion that may not lock upright, aimed mainly at shuttle, mini-coach and passenger configurations. Two others stand apart: a parking brake that can fail because a wrong part was installed, and a front driveshaft that may detach on Transit XL hybrids. Owners filed 57 unverified NHTSA complaints, most often about engine and power train, with 12 injuries reported.

Before you buy

  1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
  2. Ask for a VIN recall report showing every foldaway seat and rear cushion recall closed.
  3. Fold and latch each rear seat back yourself, and test the parking brake on a slope.
  4. If it's an XL hybrid, confirm the front driveshaft repair; ask about engine or transmission work.
  5. Open recalls are repaired free at any Ford dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
