Cadillac backup camera recalls: why does the rear view disappear?
All three recalls end the same way — no picture when you shift into reverse — but the causes differ. On 2020-2021 XT5 and XT6 with the optional Surround Vision feature, the rearview camera coaxial cable connectors were crimped improperly, so the image fails or works only intermittently. On 2019-2020 XT4, also with Surround Vision, the video processing module can lose communication with the camera and drop the image. On the 2024 Lyriq, the screen turns gray with no camera image. The thread running through all three is the video path itself: cabling on the XT5 and XT6, module software on the XT4 and Lyriq.
Warning signs to watch for
- No image when you shift into reverse — a black or blank rearview screen.
- On the 2024 Lyriq, the rearview screen turns gray with no camera picture.
- A rearview image that works sometimes and fails at other times (2020-2021 XT5, XT6).
- The camera image disappears while the rest of the display keeps working (2019-2020 XT4).
Is it safe to keep driving?
All three are rated moderate and none tells owners to stop driving or park outside. GM says the vehicle can still be driven. The real limit is what you can see: with the camera dark, gray or cutting in and out, you lose your view directly behind the vehicle, so reverse using your mirrors and by looking over your shoulder, and take extra care in driveways, parking lots and anywhere children or pets may be behind you. Schedule the free repair rather than living with it.
What the free repair involves
Three different repairs. On 2020-2021 XT5 and XT6, dealers replace the improperly crimped coaxial cables. On 2019-2020 XT4, they update the video processing module software or replace the module if necessary. On the 2024 Lyriq, the vehicle cockpit unit software is updated at a dealer or delivered over the air. Every one of these repairs is free of charge.

Common questions
Does this affect every XT5 and XT6, or only some?
The 2020-2021 coaxial cable recall covers vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature, and the same is true of the 2019-2020 XT4 recall. If your car lacks that option, check your VIN with NHTSA to confirm.
Will my Lyriq be fixed over the air?
It can be. GM says the vehicle cockpit unit software on the 2024 Lyriq will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 16, 2026.
The camera works most of the time. Do I still need the repair?
Yes. GM describes the XT5 and XT6 fault as a rearview camera that fails or functions intermittently, so an image that comes and goes is the defect itself, not a fluke. Have the coaxial cables replaced.
