Why do Cadillac seat belts keep getting recalled for loose hardware?
Across these seven Cadillac seat belt recalls the same theme repeats: the hardware that anchors a belt was assembled wrong. Missing or badly formed rivets appear twice — in 2019 XTS front buckles and in 2021-2022 Escalade and Escalade ESV third-row buckles. The 2021 Escalade and Escalade ESV show up again for third-row belts entrapped or misrouted behind the seat-folding mechanism, and once more for incorrect seat belt bolts. Rear seats dominate the rest: 2018-2019 CT6 and Escalade ESV retractors that may not lock, 2019-2021 XT4 rear retractors with loose or missing fasteners, and 2023-2024 LYRIQ rear belt anchor brackets that may have been improperly welded to the seat frame.
Warning signs to watch for
- A front or third-row buckle that feels loose where the buckle head meets the cable mounting strap
- A rear belt that does not lock when you pull the webbing all the way out — the mode used for child seats
- Third-row webbing that looks pinched, twisted, or routed behind the folding seat mechanism
- A rear retractor that shifts or rattles because its fasteners are loose or missing
- Most of these defects give no warning at all and only matter in a crash
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these seven recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside warning, so the vehicle may be driven. Two limit where people should sit: GM tells 2023-2024 LYRIQ owners to leave the left-rear and center-rear seats empty until the repair is done, and the Escalade third-row buckle and routing recalls make it wise to keep passengers out of the third row until a dealer inspects. The XTS buckles, incorrect bolts, unlocking retractors and loose fasteners only matter in a crash, so schedule the free inspection promptly.
What the free repair involves
Nearly all of this work starts with inspection. Dealers check front and third-row buckle assemblies for missing or badly formed rivets and replace them, inspect and reroute or replace third-row belts, replace the incorrect seat belt bolts, inspect and replace rear retractors, tighten loose retractor fasteners, and on the LYRIQ replace the rear seat cushion frame. No software is involved, and all of it is free.

Common questions
My Escalade shows two different third-row seat belt recalls — do I need both?
Yes. One covers 2021 belts entrapped or misrouted behind the seat-folding mechanism; the other covers the buckle retaining rivet on 2021-2022 models. They are separate inspections with separate repairs, and a dealer can check both against your VIN.
Can I still install a child seat while I wait for the repair?
If your CT6 or Escalade ESV falls under the retractor recall, the belt may not lock in the mode used to cinch a child seat, so use the lower anchors instead. LYRIQ owners should avoid the left-rear and center-rear positions entirely.
How can I tell if my seat belt is one of the defective ones?
Usually you cannot. Missing rivets, incorrect bolts and bad welds are hidden inside the assembly or behind trim. Enter your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup, or call Cadillac customer service, to confirm whether your vehicle is covered.
