Chevrolet steering recalls: lost power assist and fractured steering gears

3 NHTSA recalls · Chevrolet · Steering · model years 2018–2024 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2025-03-20

Chevrolet's steering recalls split into two very different failures. On 2024 Silverado 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty trucks, the steering gear shaft can fracture and disconnect from the steering arm — a complete loss of steering, shared with the GMC Sierra HD twins. The other pattern is electric power steering assist that quits: a software fault on 2021 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL and Escalade ESV that can drop assist at startup or while driving, and a hardware EPS failure on 2016-2018 Cadillac CTS, 2017-2018 ATS, and 2018 Camaro and Corvette. The heavy-duty trucks and 2021 full-size SUVs carry the most exposure; the car-based EPS recall is the newest, announced March 2025.

Warning signs to watch for

Is it safe to keep driving?

None of these three recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction from GM or NHTSA. The 2024 Silverado 2500/3500 shaft fracture is the one to treat as urgent, because steering can be lost completely with no warning — get the inspection immediately. The 2021 full-size SUV software recall and the 2018 CTS, ATS, Camaro and Corvette EPS recall allow driving until the repair, provided you are ready for the wheel to turn heavy suddenly; both notices tie that added effort to crash risk, particularly at low speed.

What the free repair involves

Dealers inspect the steering gear on the 2024 Silverado HD trucks and replace it if necessary. The 2021 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Yukon XL and Escalade ESV get updated power steering module software, installed at a dealer or delivered over the air. The 2016-2018 CTS, ATS, Camaro and Corvette get a new power steering gear assembly. All three repairs are free, and owner letters were mailed for each.

Common questions

Will I get any warning before the steering fails on my 2024 Silverado HD?

GM's notice describes the steering gear shaft fracturing and disconnecting from the steering arm — a complete loss of steering with no warning. That is why the inspection should happen right away, even though GM does not formally tell owners to park the truck.

Can my 2021 Tahoe or Suburban get the steering fix without a dealer visit?

Yes. GM says the power steering module software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air update, free of charge. It is the only one of these three Chevrolet steering recalls with an over-the-air option.

My Camaro's steering got heavy at low speed — is that this recall?

It may be. The March 2025 recall covers electric power steering assist failure on 2016-2018 Cadillac CTS, 2017-2018 ATS, and Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette. The notice flags heavy steering as a crash risk at low speeds; dealers replace the power steering gear assembly free.
