Why do Chevrolet equipment recalls cover jacks, block heaters and manuals?
Six Chevrolet equipment recalls split into two clusters. The first is paperwork: 2024 Malibu and Cadillac XT4 shipped with the wrong owner's manual, 2026 Silverado 1500/2500/3500 trucks left the plant with no manual at all, and 2025-2026 Colorado, Equinox EV and related GM models never downloaded the electronic manual — all three fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 225 on child restraint anchorages. The second cluster is hardware sold with the vehicle rather than built into it: an engine-block heater cord that can short on 2017-2019 Silverado 2500 and 3500 Duramax diesels, an emergency jack that can fracture on 2021-2022 Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX, and improperly heat-treated suspension and steering lock nuts on 2021-2022 Chevrolet 4500HD medium-duty trucks.
Warning signs to watch for
- A glove box manual that names a different model than your vehicle, or no manual at all.
- The electronic owner's manual never appears on the infotainment screen.
- Steering that feels loose or unstable on a 4500HD, which can follow a broken suspension or steering lock nut.
- A jack that flexes, cracks or feels unstable while raising the vehicle.
- The block heater recall describes no warning sign before an electrical short — do not plug the cord in until it is replaced.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these six recalls tells you to stop driving or park outside. The manual recalls are paperwork — the vehicle drives, steers and brakes normally. On the Duramax block heater recall you may keep driving, but do not plug the block heater cord in until the replacement is done. On the Encore GX and Trailblazer, drive normally but do not use the emergency jack until it is replaced. The 4500HD lock nut recall does not restrict driving, though broken nuts can make the truck unstable to steer, so book it soon.
What the free repair involves
Repairs are free. Dealers replace the engine block heater and its cord, replace the hex flange lock nuts as necessary on 4500HD trucks, and replace the emergency jack. For the manual recalls, dealers hand over the correct or missing printed manual, or reset the radio so the electronic manual downloads automatically. Owners whose block heater was disabled earlier are contacted and offered replacement parts.

Common questions
Is a missing owner's manual really a safety recall?
Yes. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 225 requires child restraint anchorage information in the manual, so a wrong or missing manual makes the vehicle noncompliant. The truck drives normally; the risk is using child seats or safety equipment incorrectly without the instructions.
Can I still use my block heater this winter?
No. Do not plug the cord in until the dealer replaces the block heater and cord, because the short circuit that starts a fire happens in the heater cable. If the feature was disabled earlier as a fix, GM contacts you with replacement parts.
What if I need to change a tire before the jack is replaced?
Do not use the recalled jack on an Encore GX or Trailblazer — it can fracture while the vehicle is raised, which is an injury risk. The car itself is unaffected and safe to drive, so wait for the free replacement jack.
