Chevrolet fuel system recalls: leaks that risk fire and sudden stalls
Thirteen recalls, and nearly all are one of two failures: gasoline escaping, or the fuel pump starving the engine. On the leak side, GM has replaced fuel tanks on 2019-2020 Equinox all-wheel drive for a badly sealed seam and on 2021 Tahoe and Yukon for missing adhesive, added a lock ring to 2016-2018 Cruze LS tanks, replaced high-pressure fuel pumps and pipes on 2016-2018 Colorado and Malibu and related GM models, and fixed lock rings on 2024 Colorado. On the stall side, fuel pumps and pump modules have been replaced on 2020 Traverse, 2021 Tahoe and Suburban, and 2021-2022 Equinox, and 2025-2026 Silverado 3500 dual-tank trucks get an engine control module update. Full-size trucks and SUVs appear most often.
Warning signs to watch for
- A gasoline smell around the vehicle, or fuel stains and puddles under the tank or near the filler.
- Fuel spilling into the filler pocket while refueling, especially when topping off, on 2023-2026 Corvette.
- The engine stalls or cuts out without warning, or hesitates as if starved of fuel.
- On dual-tank 3500 trucks, a front tank gauge that sticks at a low level while the rear tank drains.
- Several of these leaks only happen in a crash, so there may be no warning at all during normal driving.
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells owners to stop driving or park outside, including the fire-risk ones. GM's wording is consistent: keep driving, but get the repair done quickly. On the leak recalls — Equinox, Tahoe and Yukon tanks, the high-pressure fuel pump, the Silverado 3500 dual tanks — stop driving and have the vehicle checked immediately if you smell gasoline or see a leak. The Cruze LS and 2024 Colorado leaks only occur in a crash. The stall recalls are urgent because the engine can quit in traffic.
What the free repair involves
Everything here is free. Dealers replace fuel tanks, fuel pumps, pump modules and high-pressure fuel pipes; install a lock ring on Cruze LS tanks or a shield in the Corvette filler pocket; and inspect and fully lock the Colorado tank lock ring. The 2025-2026 Silverado 3500 stall is fixed with an engine control module update at a dealer or over the air.

Common questions
I smell gas after filling up my Corvette — what should I do?
On 2023-2026 Corvettes with a left-side radiator and fan, excess fuel can spill into the filler pocket and reach an ignition source. Fill slowly and avoid topping off until the dealer installs the free shield that diverts spilled fuel.
Why do so many of these recalls mention the engine stalling?
Five separate fuel-delivery faults can starve the engine: a burr blocking the pump nozzle, a failing pump power control module, an inconsistent pump module, a damaged sensor harness, and a rear tank that will not feed the front one. Each can shut the engine off in traffic.
My Cruze has no spare tire — does that matter?
Yes. The Cruze recall covers 2016-2018 LS models with a gasoline engine and a tire inflator kit instead of a spare. Those cars may leak fuel after a rear-impact crash and rollover, so the dealer installs a lock ring shielding the vapor pressure sensor.
