Will my Chevrolet's air bags actually deploy in a crash?
Chevrolet's air bag recalls fall into three repeating families. The first is the sensing diagnostic module: 2019 Spark, Traverse and Trax, with the Buick Encore, plus some 2022 Silverado 1500s left the plant in manufacturing mode, and the 2019 Corvette ZR1's module could fault under hard braking. The second is passenger sensing — miscalibrated systems on 2016-2018 Malibu and 2023 Equinox and Terrain that may misjudge a child or an adult. The third is roof-rail inflators on 2018 Silverado 1500 and 2018-2019 Silverado 2500 and 3500 crew cabs, recalled again in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Assembly defects round it out: missing air bag fasteners on 2022 Bolt models, missing tabs on 2021 Silverados, and Traverse wiring and calibration problems from 2020-2022.
Warning signs to watch for
- Usually nothing at all — most notices describe no symptom, and the defect only shows up in a crash
- A front passenger air bag status indicator that does not match who is in the seat, including with a small child or child restraint (2016-2018 Malibu, 2023 Equinox)
- A driver's air bag cover that sits loose in the steering wheel on a 2021 Silverado 1500, where securing tabs may be missing
- On a 2019 Corvette ZR1, hard braking or acceleration can put the sensing diagnostic module into a fault state
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these Chevrolet air bag recalls tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and the vehicles drive normally. The risk appears in a crash: air bags that do not deploy, deploy incorrectly, or, on 2018-2019 Silverado crew cabs, a roof-rail inflator that can rupture and throw metal pieces into the cabin. Until the passenger sensing recalls on the Malibu and Equinox are repaired, keep children and child seats in the back. The 2022 Silverado 1500 module recall involved unsold vehicles that were already corrected at the plant.
What the free repair involves
Repairs split between software and hardware. Dealers reprogram or activate the sensing diagnostic module, or load the correct air bag calibration software. Otherwise they replace parts: the passenger presence or occupant classification system, a damaged frontal air bag module, driver air bag fasteners, the roof-rail air bag harness connector, a Bolt instrument panel, and both roof-rail modules on Silverado crew cabs. All free; none over-the-air.

Common questions
My truck already had the roof-rail air bags replaced. Why another recall?
GM issued roof-rail inflator recalls covering 2018 Silverado 1500 and 2019 Silverado 2500 and 3500 crew cabs in October 2024, June 2025 and March 2026. Each replaces both left and right modules, so check your VIN against the most recent notice.
Can a child ride in the front seat before the repair?
Better not to. On 2016-2018 Malibu and 2023 Equinox models, the passenger sensing system may not tell an adult from a child, or may fail to disable the air bag for a child restraint. Use the back seat.
Will the air bag warning light tell me my vehicle is affected?
The notices do not promise that. Several describe no symptom at all, including modules left in manufacturing mode, a missing air bag fastener, or an instrument panel missing its deployment perforation. Check your VIN against NHTSA's database rather than waiting for a light.
